Enjoy this Q&A with Latrobe Lifeskills staff member, Teala.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Latrobe Lifeskills and how long you’ve been here.
I live with my husband, three sons and cheeky Jack Russell dog (Sam). My eldest (23yr old) son has Autism, this has been a major influence in my interest in the disability industry.
I have worked with the Bendigo Latrobe Lifeskills team for over three years, supporting participants in Art& Craft, Zumba, Swimming, Acredited Training, Cooking, Bowling, Health & Wellbeing and Travel Training activities.
I came to Latrobe Lifeskills with a background in education, including five years in adult education (disability), ten years secondary teaching and seven years in primary education support. I have a strong passion in education and assisting others to develop new skills, confidence, self-esteem and achieve individual goals.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any hobbies?
I enjoy catching up with friends, shopping, swimming, dancing, music, watching movies, art and eating chocolate.
What do you think makes Lifeskills unique in the way it supports participants?
Lifeskills offers a range of interesting supports that provide the opportunity for participants to engage in enriching activities they enjoy. Staff have a strong focus on supporting each participant to develop friendships, social skills, confidence, self-esteem, life skills, be active members in the community, achieve individual goals and build independence.
Can you share a memorable moment or success story from your time at Latrobe Lifeskills?
One of my favourite moments at Lifeskills was during our Travel Training visit to ARTVO Melbourne. I enjoyed seeing the excitement and pure joy on participants faces as they interacted with the murals, happily smiling and posing for photos. We all really look forward to our trips to Melbourne, but this one was special as it was a unique experience for many. We managed to snap some amazing photos of our memorable day.
Another special moment at Lifeskills would have to be supporting participants to develop a folio of finished artworks and providing the opportunity to exhibit their carefully made artworks in the Bendigo Agricultural Show. The excitement on participant’s faces at their first exhibition was a very proud and inspiring moment.
