The focus of the curriculum is to enable participants with special learning needs to find the most appropriate option for themselves in the community and/ or further training after leaving school. This may include supported employment, volunteer work or further study.
Delivery Of Training
Training is predominantly delivered in a face-to-face classroom based setting at the Lifeskills Bundoora and/or Bendigo training sites located on campus at La Trobe University.
This mainstream learning environment is accessible via public transport, provides buildings and toilets that are wheelchair accessible and has food and drink amenities available on campus.
Lifeskills supports the learning needs of people with disability by ensuring that training rooms have Wi-Fi access, projectors, computers, whiteboards and smart technologies, air-conditioning, and heating. Lifeskills is able to access breakout areas as required.
Lifeskills also provides a range of practical vocational learning opportunities including excursion trips, horticulture and gardening, a car wash, and tool hire to support learning. These are setup as simulated work environments where the Trainer/Assessors will be supervising at all times.
Entry Requirements
Entry to the Certificate I in Transition Education is intended for post compulsory school age participants with evidence of a permanent cognitive impairment / intellectual disability. Evidence of permanent cognitive impairment / intellectual disability could include (for more information, refer to Certificate I in Transition Education Accredited Course Guide:
- Formal assessment by a registered medical practitioner
- Doctors / specialist reports
- Attendance at a Specialist School / SDS
- Integration support at school
- Integration support at school with modified curriculum
- NDIS Plan
Participants in the Certificate I in Work Education course will have been identified as having a disability/disabilities or special needs that impact on their ability to learn and/or rate of learning. Participants entering the course will, through their Pre-Training Review and Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment, have demonstrated the minimum foundation skills (based on the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)) Levels to successfully undertake and complete this course. Participants may be asked to attend for a trial period to ensure the course is suitable for their needs and interests.
Duration:
The course is delivered over 2 years on a part-time study basis. Lifeskills will provide a timetable and schedule prior to commencement of training.
Practical Placement
Within the Unit of Competency VU23031 Participate in practical placement with support, there is a practical placement requirement of up to 10 working days (approximate of 75 to 80 hours), where:
- Latrobe Lifeskills negotiates and organises this practical placement opportunity.
- Participants are required to keep a diary and logbook of tasks performed and attendances for each placement day.
- The Lifeskills Trainer will be out for a site visit (up to two times as required) to perform practical observations and structured demonstrations of how the Participant is tracking along.
- At the end of the placement there will be section for the Workplace Supervisor to give feedback and sign off on the authenticity of the placement.
Trainer/Assessors support the Participants to:
- Learn and adjust into the work placement.
- Build a Participant’s pre-employment skills (writing a resume, cover letter, interview simulations, travel training, strengths and weaknesses identification, barriers, and strategies to mitigate them, job requirements and meeting them) and desire to work.
- Teach the Participants the skills and knowledge to identify, select, negotiate, and participate in work placement opportunities.
- Shortlist several industries of interest (E.g.: administration work, retail, food and beverage service, warehousing, etc.
- Send out resumes and cover letters, assist with making contact (phone calls, emails) with potential employers for inquiries, attend interviews together and negotiate Practical Placements with employers.
- Assist with identifying barriers, breaking down of daily tasks, and supporting the Participant to work closely with a Workplace Supervisor.
Latrobe Lifeskills can provide 1:1 Participant Support Workers for the Participants in order to provide guidance on preparing for work (OHS considerations like PPE, travel arrangements, work schedules, assist with familiarity of the site, breaking down of job tasks) based on individual needs.
