The safe use of social media is a topic often discussed at Latrobe Lifeskills, with most participants using some form of social media to connect with friends and family.
The eSafety Commissioner states that young people with disability more likely to express themselves online despite higher rates of abuse.
It was with this in mind that we recently had the pleasure of working with Victoria Police to deliver an information session to Lifeskills participants addressing topics like:
- What details should I share about myself online?
- How do I know who I’m really talking to?
- Is there such a thing as messaging too much?
- What are some ‘red flags’ to look out for?
- How long do photos and posts stay on the internet?
- How can I get help if I need to report a cyber crime/issue?
- When should I make a police report about online incidents?
To wrap up the day, participants and police mingled over some pizza and great conversation.
Thank you to Senior Constable Loretta Faila and Unit Manager Robbie Gelvezon for their compelling, interactive and intriguing presentation that had participants talking in the many days after.
Thanks also to Inspector Chris Allen for making it all happen as part of the Latrobe Lifeskills x Victoria Police Academy.
This is just one of the many experiences on offer for Latrobe Lifeskills participants in Bundoora and Bendigo.
