At Latrobe Lifeskills, we believe that building independence starts with practical experiences—and that includes understanding the power of voting. As a registered NDIS provider offering group-based supports in Bundoora and Bendigo, we’re committed to creating opportunities that help participants grow in confidence and engage meaningfully in their communities.
One of the most valuable events on our calendar is the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) voter information session and mock election. This session is an interactive, empowering experience that breaks down barriers to participation in one of our most important democratic rights.
A Real-World Learning Opportunity
This year’s session at our Bundoora campus coincided with the Federal Election, making the experience especially relevant. However, the information covered applies broadly to Local Council, State, and Federal elections. Participants learned how elections work, how to fill out a ballot paper correctly, what to expect at a polling place, and what supports are available to make voting more accessible.
The mock election gave everyone a chance to practice the process in a safe, supportive environment. For many, it was their first time exploring the steps involved in voting—and they came away more confident, informed, and prepared to make their voices heard.
We’re excited to announce that we’ll be hosting another VEC voting session at our Bendigo campus next week, offering more participants the chance to engage with this important learning experience.
Building Confidence, Supporting Choice
What makes the VEC session so impactful is its focus on choice, voice, and accessibility. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, reflect on what matters to them, and take ownership of their right to vote. The session also includes take-home resources for participants, carers, and support networks—ensuring the learning continues beyond the session.
We see first-hand how experiences like this contribute to self-advocacy and independence, two key pillars of the work we do at Lifeskills.
Why Lifeskills?
