Enjoy this Q&A with John!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Latrobe Lifeskills and how long you’ve been here.
My name is John, and I have been working as a participant support worker at Latrobe Lifeskills (Bundoora) for a little over 12 Months. My background comprised working as an Outside School Hours Care Coordinator for13 years; including four years based at Concord School, Watsonia.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any hobbies?
I’m an active person that enjoys playing golf, tennis, cycling, DIY home projects, and gardening in my spare time. Aside from this; more leisurely activities involve reading novels (my favourite autobiographical novels have included Jimmy Barnes, and Cadel Evans), and touring Victorian towns on weekends- looking for the ultimate lemon slice or hot chocolate.
What do you think makes Lifeskills unique in the way it supports participants?
I believe Latrobe Lifeskills supports the participants in a way that allows them to have a high level of autonomy within their sessions. This consists of staff offering participants multiple options; however the staff are open to suggestions from the participants- and implementing them in the immediate session if feasible. ie. if a participant during gardening is given the choice of weeding, or planting; however wishes to make a hanging basket or garden ornament instead- this feedback will be implemented by staff.
Additionally; participants are also warmly acknowledged, and staff take the time to chat to them individually and chat about the footy or how their weekends were. This makes for a welcoming, inclusive and friendly environment for all.
Can you share a memorable moment or success story from your time here?
A highlight that springs to mind is when Singing Group performed at The Agora (La Trobe University Food court area) one afternoon for a live performance earlier this year, and at Thomastown Recreation & Aquatic Centre (TRAC); as part of proceedings for International Day of People with Disability in December 2024. The participants enjoyed all aspects of the lead up, preparation, and ultimately the final performances. Viewing the participants step outside of their comfort zone, and display energy and enthusiasm, and the capability to recite lyrics effectively when performing in front of audiences was an unforgettable and inspiring effort.
