Staff Profile: Meet Michelle

Enjoy getting to know Michelle as part of our new Staff Profile series.

Tell us a bit about yourself, your role at Latrobe Lifeskills, and how long you’ve been here

Hi, I’m Michelle, and I’ve been part of Latrobe Lifeskills for the past two and a half years. I currently support participants across a variety of activities, including Recreation and Leisure in the Community, Literacy and Numeracy, Sport, and Trivia. I completed my Certificate IV in Disability in 2019 and am passionate about helping people build their independence and confidence in everyday life.

Alongside my role at Lifeskills, I also work a couple of days a week with a residential disability provider, which further deepens my understanding and experience in the sector.

Working at Latrobe Lifeskills has been incredibly rewarding. No two days are ever the same, and I truly value being part of such a supportive, inclusive and person-centered team.

Life outside of work keeps me just as busy! I’m a proud mum of three, two girls and a boy, and our home is full of life with two dogs, a cat, and a bird. I love going out for dinner and, can’t go a day without a strong coffee!

What do you think makes Lifeskills unique in the way it supports participants?

What truly sets Latrobe Lifeskills apart is our exceptional team and their deep-seated empathy and unwavering commitment to supporting participants. This dedication clearly reflects the core values of Latrobe Life skills and makes a real, lasting difference in the lives of those we support.

Our staff consistently go above and beyond, not only by helping participants achieve their personal goals, but also by providing vital emotional support when it’s most needed. It’s this combination of practical assistance and genuine care that defines the unique impact of Latrobe Lifeskills.

What do you enjoy outside of work? Any hobbies?

Outside of work, I love going out for dinner and brunch. Trying new cafes and restaurants is one of my favourite things to do.

I really enjoy spending quality time with my family, friends, and pets, as well as going for walks and listening to music.

I’m passionate about interior design and shopping, and I find a lot of joy in creating beautiful spaces. Travelling is another big interest of mine. My most recent adventure was a European holiday where my family and  I visited Greece, Portugal, and Spain. I speak fluent Spanish, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

I also love watching international movies and taking care of my indoor plants. I find it a relaxing way to unwind and bring a bit of nature indoors.

Can you share a memorable moment or success story from your time here?

One of the most memorable moments at Latrobe Lifeskills came from a participant who joined with a heartfelt goal, to make friends. Initially shy and reserved, he quietly stepped into his first group activity, unsure of what to expect.

From day one, his peers welcomed him warmly, making him feel included and valued. That sense of belonging sparked a remarkable transformation. Within a short time, he began to flourish, engaging more confidently, forming genuine connections, and becoming an active part of the group.

This journey wasn’t just transformative for him, it uplifted the entire Lifeskills community. It’s a powerful reminder of how inclusive, supportive environments can help individuals grow, connect, and thrive.
