What is the NDIS?

You may have heard of the NDIS in the news recently or you may be doing some research into the Scheme for yourself, a friend or a loved one. But what is the NDIS and what are its benefits? We go over the basics below.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a groundbreaking initiative in Australia that aims to revolutionise the way people with disabilities receive support and services. Launched in 2013, the NDIS represents a significant shift from the previous welfare-based model to a person-centered approach, empowering individuals with disabilities to exercise greater choice and control over their lives.

The NDIS is based on the principle that every person with a disability should have equal opportunities and access to the support they need to live a fulfilling life. It provides eligible participants with a personalised plan that outlines their specific goals, support needs, and funding. This plan covers a wide range of support services such as social and community engagement, allied health services, personal care, therapy, assistive technology, housing, and employment assistance.

One of the key strengths of the NDIS is its emphasis on individual choice and control. Participants have the freedom to choose their own service providers and manage their funding, giving them greater autonomy and the ability to shape their support according to their preferences. This person-centered approach recognises that each person’s needs and aspirations are unique, and empowers them to make decisions that best suit their circumstances.

Latrobe Lifeskills has been delivering support under the NDIS since 2015 and continues to deliver support as a registered provider to adults with a disability in the Bundoora and Bendigo areas.

More information about the NDIS can be found on their official website; www.ndis.gov.au
